Preparing Your Mixes For Mastering
Mastering is the final polish that brings your music to life. To get the best results from your mastering session, here are some tips -
- Export your finished mixes at their original sample rate, and at either 24 or 32bit
- If you’re using some plugins on your master bus, leave these on for mastering, as taking them off will change the way elements of your mix interact with each other (unless you have a limiter on your master bus purely to make things louder - I can sort the loudness!)
- Leave some space at the beginning and the end of each song to ensure nothing gets cut off
- Make sure your mixes are clearly labelled, for example; song name > artist name > mix version
- Export any alternative mixes (instrumental, radio edit etc) and label clearly
- Import your finished mix into a new DAW session
- Listen through to your mixes in full to make sure you’re super happy with the way they sound and feel
